That’s a wrap: Day 4 at the Melbourne Royal Show
The atmosphere was electric on day four of the Melbourne Royal Show, celebrating both the fierce woodchopping battle with the coveted Golden Axe, and the promising future of agriculture in the Livestock Pavilion.
Darren Keating, Executive General Manager, Agriculture at Melbourne Royal said it was particularly pleasing to see Australia’s agricultural future in action.
“Emerging leaders in agriculture from all round Australia have converged on Melbourne Showgrounds and we certainly saw some of the best in the Melbourne Royal Beef Carcase Competition School and College Paraders’ Competition today,” he said.
Melbourne Royal Woodchop Championships
The prestigious Golden Axe was up for grabs and competitors chopped it up in a fierce battle for glory! The Golden Axe perpetual trophy is awarded to the competitor gaining the highest number of points across the Melbourne Royal Woodchop Championships.

Melbourne Royal Beef Carcase Competition
The School and College Paraders’ Competition in the carcass competition took the limelight today, with young agricultural students presenting their livestock to the judges, demonstrating their dedication to the industry.

Melbourne Royal Alpaca Competition
Victoria’s premier Alpaca event attracted hundreds of entries in two main breed categories, Huacaya and Suri. The difference between these two major breeds? Rather than the bright, crimpy fleece of the Huacaya, the Suri has a long hanging, dreadlock type lustrous fleece that hangs close to the body. Today was all about the halter sections where a judge assessed both conformation and fleece characteristics on each alpaca. In general, the judge looks for evidence of positive traits and the absence of negative traits.
