That’s a wrap: Day 3 at Melbourne Royal Show

From the endearing alpacas and the skill of young dairy cattle handlers, to the power of women dominating the woodchopping arena, day three of Melbourne Royal Show was packed with highlights.

Brad Jenkins, Chief Executive Officer, Melbourne Royal, said competition was fierce, with exhibitors and competitors from across the country out in full force.

“It is wonderful to see that interest in participating this year is back to pre-Covid levels, particularly in nominations for the Horses in Action competition up by 20 per cent compared to last year and Beef Cattle competition entries are up by more than 30 per cent,” he said.

Melbourne Royal Woodchop Championships

Fierce Woodchop competitors showcased their incredible strength and skill in the woodchopping today.

Day three wrapped up with an impressive showcase of talent in the Saddle, Turnout, and Light Harness competitions.

Champion Harness Shetland: Lisa McLennan on Kilpara Park on Point, driven by Darryl Hayes

Melbourne Royal All Breeds Championships Show

Day three was a whirlwind of excitement with the Confirmation & Action Dog Agility Games, and Beagles, Dachshunds, Australian Cattle Dogs, Australian Kelpies and Papillons before the judges.

Melbourne Royal Beef Carcase Competition

Widely recognised as the most prestigious interbreed steer and carcase award in Australia, The Borthwick Trophy is a competition between teams of three purebred steers. The results of both led and carcase judging were considered in determining the winner.

Melbourne Royal Alpaca Competition

Day three was all about celebrating youth in the alpaca scene! Young handlers took centre stage, making for a heartwarming day that highlighted the next generation’s commitment to the alpaca community. The Alpaca Exhibitor Function in the Livestock Bar also proved a crowd-pleaser for showgoers keen to learn more about these loveable animals.

Young Judges and Paraders Competition

Youth, dedication, and the bright future of agriculture was on display in the ASA National Dairy Cattle Young Judging and parading competitions. These competitions offer a unique opportunity for young men and women to grow personally and professionally by honing their analytical, communication and presentation skills.

The Dairy Cattle Paraders competition gives young people the chance to develop their confidence and experience with handling livestock and competing in front of an audience.
