Melbourne Royal Celebrates 175 Years of History
In 2023, Melbourne Royal proudly celebrates 175 years since the organisation was first formed in 1848 by a group of farmers who were then known as the Moonee Ponds Farmers’ Society and conducted ploughing matches to improve agriculture.

Celebrating our Past, Cultivating our Future
From the first ploughing match held in 1848, Melbourne Royal has remained Victoria’s home to great blue-ribbon competitions, world-class food and beverage award programs and vibrant events. 175 years later, Melbourne Royal is still organising events and competitions and is a protector for the state’s agricultural legacy.
Show visitors in 2023 appreciated the Melbourne Royal Museum pop-up, the historic timeline wall located alongside the Poultry Pavilion, and the heritage displays within the competition areas.
