Beef Cattle and Beef Carcase Competition

There's nothing like award winning livestock at the Royal Melbourne Show.

2010 Feature Breed
This year the RASV welcomes the Simmental as the feature beef breed, which will be held in conjunction with the World Simmental Congress.

Simmentals originated in Switzerland and grew to become Europe's dominant dual purpose beef/milk breed. Over the past 30 years, the Simmental breed spread to other continents, including North and South America, Africa and Australasia, where Simmentals are predominantly used for beef production.

Today, there are over 50 million Simmentals worldwide, making the breed the second most populous world breed following Bos Indicus breeds.

Since its introduction to Australia in 1972, the Australian Simmental has developed into a breed with all-round superior performance, when used either as a pure breed or in crossbreeding programs.

For further information on the Simmental breed or World Congress visit www.simmental.com.au

Led Steer & Heifer Competition – ALPA Victorian Young Auctioneers Competition
The ALPA Victorian Young Auctioneers Competition is set to be a highlight of the Royal Melbourne Show.

In 2009 a Shorthorn steer was donated by Barrie and Yvonne Crotty of Barvon Shorthorns and was prepared by Finley High School and David Bolton. The steer was auctioned for charity and was purchased by Tasman Market Fresh for $7500.

This year a Simmental steer has been donated by Tom Baker of Woonallee Simmentals, South Australia to be auctioned for charity. Finley High School and David Bolton will again prepare the steer for the Led Steer & Heifer Competition and auction.

Dairy Cattle Competition

There's nothing like the Royal Melbourne Dairy Show.

The new Royal Melbourne Dairy Show will be held Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 September, 2010, at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

Comprising of the Kubota Dairy Youth Classic and dairy cattle breed and interbreed competitions which culminate in the prestigious Royal Melbourne Champion Dairy Cow award, the Royal Melbourne Dairy Show will provide a springtime focus for the dairy industry.

Participating exhibitors can expect to be treated with more prize money, a welcome breakfast and evening celebration to bring the exciting new event to a close.

School students will be invited to participate in interactive displays and see dairy cattle being prepared and judged. It is expected that the Royal Melbourne Dairy Show will attract industry and wider publicity in the lead up to the Royal Melbourne Show.
